Understanding English Language Teaching

Why General English?

Our General English courses are designed to give students the opportunity to learn English at any level. So, whether you have low level English skills or a more advanced student, there is a course to suit you. The classes are fun and students have the chance to learn and improve all their language skills, including reading, writing, listening and speaking.

The General English course includes:

•    Theme-based language development from the core textbook
•    Skills extension
•    Weekly review and testing
•    Study visits

You will progress through the course as you successfully complete each level, but be aware that very few students complete all four levels within a 48-week period and it is likely that you will need to repeat one or more levels, or part of a level, in order to gain a high degree of proficiency.

Students in all courses are expected to do homework as a part of their coursework.

Assessment

It is very important for students to have an indication of their progress in their course of study. That is why we have a range of assessments to help students monitor their progress and provide their teachers with information on how best to help them with their English language studies.

o    In GE, you are given a placement test on your first day at the college so that we can place you in the class that is adequate for your English level.
o    Following that, you do a weekly revision test based on the course book unit you have studied that week.
o    At the end of 4 units of study, there will also be a more comprehensive assessment to check your progress and highlight areas that you can improve on.
o    At the end of each 12 weeks courses, there will also be a more formal test to see whether you are ready to progress to the next level of the course.

One day Study Tours

Social and cultural activities are a great way for students to improve their English communication skills. You will have the opportunity to go on study tours with your teacher and class mates to a variety of places in Sydney and other attractions in New South Wales and Canberra.

Understanding English Language Teaching

Your Study Program

Some students find study in Australia very different from home and may take time to adjust. In Australian schools and colleges you are expected to participate in your lessons, ask questions and do your own research. You can expect to spend less time listening to the teacher and writing down what is said and more time discussing and writing down what you think.

You may find that you have less homework than you are used to and the things you are asked to do might seem a little unusual.

Your first impression might be that study in Australia is easier than at home but to be successful in studying English requires a lot of hard work. It is your responsibility to study hard at all times and to do all the work required even if it doesn’t really seem like school work to you. Remember that to learn to speak a language you must talk, and joining in discussions in English in your classes is one of the ways that you will improve.

Using English

It is your responsibility to use only English as far as possible when you are on the college’s premises, not only out of class, but especially in the classroom. While it is difficult to use English in the classroom every attempt should be made to do so. Using native language should be resisted where possible.
