Frequently Asked Questions

What time should I arrive on my first day?

You should arrive at SGSCC International no later than 8.30 a.m. on your first day of your course. You will be welcomed by the College staff and given a placement test to help us find the right class for you. You will start your classes on the second day of your course enrolment. More information can be found under course information.

What is involved in the test?

You will be tested on the five skill areas: Reading, Writing, Speaking, Grammar and Listening. The Reading, Listening and Writing are given to you in a test format whilst the Speaking is done through an informal interview with the Academic Manager or a teacher to get to know you a little bit more and assess your ability in this skill area. More information can be found under course information.

What will I study during lessons?

All lessons use a range of material from a course book with extra supplementary material in the form of worksheets and photocopies. The material will develop your English in all skill areas including Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. You will also be able to improve you vocabulary and pronunciation; learn about Australian culture and history; learn Australian expressions and idioms – all the while having fun. More information can be found under General English Information and English for Academic Purposes.

What are the rules for attendance?

Under Student visa requirements, you will be required to attend at least 80% of your classes during the period of your enrolment. If your attendance falls below 90%, the College will issue you with a warning letter to remind you of the importance placed on attendance requirements by the Australian government and by SGSCC International. What if I am sick?

If you are sick for more than a day you should go and see a doctor, even if your illness does not require you to take prescription medicines. You should ask your doctor to give you a medical certificate for your absence. This may be used as evidence in case your attendance drops below 80%. If in doubt you can ask the teacher at the College or speak to the Academic Manager. Click here for Health Cover Information

What can I do if I have a problem?

If you have a problem, you should talk to a friend or another student or any of the College staff – your teacher, or the Academic Manager. We are all here to help you with whatever matter, no matter how big or small – so just ask! If the person you talk to cannot help you, they will refer you to another person who can. If you need to talk to an independent person then you can talk to the Student Support Officer.

What do I need to do if I move house?

Under Australian government immigration regulations for student visa holders it is a requirement that you tell the College if you have changed any of your contact details such as address or telephone number within 14 days of the change. Even so, it is very important that all students notify the College so that we always have your current details. This ensures that we can continue to care for you and to notify you of any important matters. Click here for Accommodation information.
